Opportunity Class
OC Exam:
OC Exam Preparation (NSW)
Australia's New South Wales Department of Education runs the Opportunity Class (OC), a selective educational programme.
Students in Years 5 and 6 (ages 9 to 12) who are brilliant and talented will get an academically demanding and engaging education through the programme, which is tailored to their specific learning requirements.
A specialised curriculum is provided through the OC programme, which goes above and beyond the ordinary curriculum and offers additional chances for intellectual growth and development.
It attempts to develop students' abilities in a variety of subjects, such as English, maths, science, technology, and the creative arts. The Opportunity Class Placement Test, a very competitive entrance exam, determines students' eligibility for admission to the OC programme. There are roughly 76 primary schools in NSW that offer the programme. With an extended curriculum, unique teaching techniques, and extra resources, the programme offers a stimulating learning environment that will challenge and engage bright pupils. The programme is well-known for its academic rigour and is frequently utilised as a steppingstone to NSW's elite high schools.
The OC test structure is as follows:
OC Tests:
Opportunity Classes for academically gifted Year 5 and Year 6 pupils with high potential are held at government elementary schools. By placing students in groups with peers of a similar ability, utilising specific teaching techniques, and using educational resources at the right level, these sessions aid students in learning.
When applying and taking the test, students are typically in Year 4. When students begin Year 5, they range in age from 9 years, 5 months to 11 years. By the start of the school year in which a pupil enrols, all members of their family must reside in NSW. To enrol in an opportunity class, a student must be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or a citizen of New Zealand.
The OC Test - Reading Part 1 is a standardized test that assesses a student's ability to comprehend a text.
The test is divided into three question types:
  1. Finding information
  2. Guessing word and phrase meanings
  3. Determining the literal and inferred meaning of a text

Among these, questions involving the literal and inferred meanings of a text are considered the most challenging. The test aims to measure a student’s critical reading skills, such as identifying main ideas, supporting details, and making inferences.

It also assesses a student’s vocabulary and ability to use context clues to determine word meanings.

The OC Test Mathematical Reasoning Part 2 is a component of the selection process for entry to Opportunity Classes in New South Wales, Australia.
2024 Opportunity Classes on 27 July 2023.

It assesses students’ mathematical skills, including their ability to solve numerical problems and puzzles, understand number patterns and sequences, and apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations.

The test consists of multiple-choice questions, and students are given a set amount of time to complete it. The test for entry to the 2024 Opportunity Classes will be held on 27 July 2023.

The OC Test - Thinking Skills Part 3: Critical thinking, Identify patterns, and Solve visual, numerical, and word problems

The Thinking Skills component of the OC Placement Test assesses students’ critical thinking abilities, requiring them to identify patterns and solve visual, numerical, and word problems and puzzles across a broad range of topics. The two main question types in this section are Spatial Reasoning and Logical Reasoning, each with multiple subtypes.

Spatial Reasoning Questions

Spatial Reasoning questions focus on visualizing different arrangements of shapes, while Logical Reasoning questions involve applying logic to order, solve, deduce, and draw conclusions from given sets of rules. Students often find this section challenging due to the many unseen or unfamiliar questions, a large amount of information to read and interpret in a short period, and the need to identify which skill or technique to apply efficiently.

To overcome these difficulties, students can work on improving their verbal problem-solving, visualization, and pattern recognition skills through targeted practice and experience.
